Dr. Zheng Peng is interested in the modeling, optimization, development and experimental evaluation of wireless ad-hoc sensor networks and networked systems, especially in the unique underwater environment. He has been conducting active research in the area of underwater wireless networks since 2005. In these research endeavors, he has gone through the entire design spectrum, including the modeling, solution design, implementation and performance analysis of underwater wireless sensor networks and embedded/distributed systems.
He has published over 50 technical papers at international conferences and journals. A recent publication is selected as the spotlight paper for the January 2012 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. Several students under his supervision won the best paper awards in IFIP Networking 2013 and WUWNet 2013.
He is also the co-author of a book “Underwater Wireless Networks: Principles, Protocols and Implementations”, to be published in Sep, 2014. This book is one of the first book to introduce underwater wireless networks from the networking and system perspectives. It includes the most up-to-date technologies and on-going research in underwater networking, with real system implementations.
Dr. Peng's papers have been cited by various technical papers, thesis and book chapters by researchers from the US, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Turkey, Australia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, India, Iran, Algeria, Mauritius and Brazil, in languages from English, Chinese, Korean to Portuguese. His Google Scholar citation is over 900 as of Oct 2015.
In addition to his theoretical work, Dr. Peng believes that a good researcher needs to bridge the gap between theory and practice. He tackles research challenges from a system and cross-layer perspective and has designed and implemented software/hardware platforms which are powerful tools for the advances of underwater wireless sensor networks. Furthermore, he has led his team and conducted various field tests in the oceans from North America to Asia.
Dr. Peng also participates in various professional activities, due to his expertise in the area. He served as a reviewer for a variety of prestige international journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions for Vehicular technology, IEEE Communication letters, IEEE Signal Processing Letters, Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks, Elsevier Computer Communications and Elsevier Computer Networks. In Santander, Spain, 2011, he was invited as the session chair of IEEE OCEANS conference on the topic for Marine Communications and Technology. He served as a technical program committee (TPC) member of CHINACOM in 2011, the web chair of ACM WUWNet 2010 and 2011, the publicity chair of ACM WUWNet 2013, the TPC member of ACM WUWNet 2014.
